Murillo-Rohde was the first current president Association of Spanish-Speaking Spanish-Surname Nurses (NASSSN), which was renamed the Governing Board of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) in 1979.

Murillo-Rohde was appointed to a commission that investigated the quality of care in New York City hospitals by David Dinkins in 1991.

He was named a Living Legend of the American Academy of Nursing in 1994. Murillo-Rohde died on September 5, 2010, a day before his 90th birthday, in Panama. In his honour, NAHN bestows a scholarship and an Academic Excellence Award.
